Our Story
Christina Noble and her husband founded a trekking company in an isolated valley in Lahaul in the Northwest Himalyas in 1970. Today, Christina works to support community social enterprise in Argyll, Scotland, and her son Rahul works with textile based community enterprises in India.
To make the mufflers, we work with the Mahila Mandal in Urgos and Chaling. The organisation is focused on providing benefit for rural women and the profit goes back to them.

Completely Unique
The Miyar Mufflers collection has been handcrafted from shear-to-stitch by farmer-artisans using wool from their own sheep.
The mufflers are made during the long winters when the heavy snow means there is little to do in the fields and the women instead gather round their stove, talk and knit.
Every piece is completely unique.

Our Process
Sheep are sheared twice a year, with the summer wool the best. The wool is then cleaned, carded, hand-spun and hand-knitted, and finished with an intricate three-way knotting of the tassels. Here, they undergo rigorous quality checks and are gently hand-washed in the fast running Himalayan streams, ensuring each muffler meets our high standards of craftsmanship and quality.

Behind the Knots
All our pieces are hand-spun and knitted by women in the Miyar valley. The number of knots on each piece indicates the name of the knitter.
