Knitted Warmth from the High Himalayas

In an isolated valley in the Northwest Himalayas, local women hand knit intricate, warming mufflers with lanoline-rich wool from their mountain sheep.

Our Story

In the remote Miyar Valley of the Western Himalayas, wool is part of everyday life. Each year, sheep provide a limited amount of wool, which the women of Urgos and Chaling spin and knit by hand into mufflers, scarves, and throws.

These women work year-round, balancing household, farming, and community responsibilities with the patient process of knitting. No two pieces are ever alike — each reflects the pace of the valley and the hands that made it.

Because the supply of wool is small and every stage of the work is done by hand, our collections are always limited. Profits return directly to the Mahila Mandal, the local women’s collective, strengthening livelihoods and keeping this craft alive for the next generation.

Behind the Knots

Every Miyar Muffler carries a hidden signature: a woolen thread marked with a series of hand-tied knots. The number of knots on this thread corresponds to the individual woman who knitted your piece.
When you count the knots and check our “Meet the Knitters” section on our website, you’ll discover the name of the knitter and the village she comes from.
This system allows each piece to carry not just warmth, but a traceable human connection, celebrating the skill, dedication, and lives of the women of Urgos and Chaling.

Completely Unique

Every Miyar Muffler is hand-knitted by women in Urgos and Chaling, using wool from their own sheep.
During the long winter months, when the fields are buried in snow, these women come together by the stove to knit, share stories, and create each piece with care.

Because the wool is limited and each stitch is made by hand, every muffler is truly one of a kind.

When you buy a Miyar Muffler, you are not buying from a factory. You are choosing the work of skilled women in one of the most remote valleys of the Himalayas — and supporting a way of life that values craft, community, and the land itself.

Our Process

Sheep are sheared twice a year, with the summer wool the best. The wool is then cleaned, carded, hand-spun and hand-knitted, and finished with an intricate three-way knotting of the tassels. Every muffler is carefully checked for quality and is gently hand-washed in the fast-flowing Himalayan streams. Each step is done by hand, ensuring every piece meets the high standards of skill, care, and craftsmanship.
